Even
Start Site Directors Honored in 2003
Above and Beyond in Hohenwald...
The
Above & Beyond Awards are presented annually at the South Central
TN Workforce Board & Youth Council Youth Summit. The award is
given to an individual in each of the eight counties represented by the South
Central TN Workforce Board. The recipients represent many facets of the area's
communities that work with youth, from employers who hire or sponsor youth
programming, to youth programmers, to community-based organizations which
serve youth as their mission.
Denise Allen (above, left), representing the Lewis County
Even Start Project, was the 2003 recipient for Lewis County for her successful
start-up and implementation of the project in Hohenwald and the surrounding
county. The award was presented at the Youth Summit "Breaking Barriers"
on October 30, 2003. Even Start provides developmentally appropriate educational
services to preschool age children as well as to their parents, who are working
to graduate from high school or obtain a GED, or or to obtain basic skills
that can lead to successful employment. Combined with parenting support and
education, Even Start works to break the multigenerational cycle of poverty
that often persists in homes of low education levels. We congratulate Denise
and all who work with this highly effective program.
Johnson City Even Start Site Director Kathy Osborn was recognized
in 2003 by the Tennessee Association for Family and Consumer Science.
